Garden Design

Garden Design proposal, (Not Graphic Design)

Below is the old school way of Garden Design, identifying the plant and researching per plant from external resources. Today, Chat GPT and AI is gradually taking over the industry. Thou they are useful online applications; they are not advanced at present to a final solution.  That means you’ll see a gardener or horticulturist need to perfect the result.

General Garden Maintenance throughout the year

Garden maintenance in general means is simply clearing an overgrown garden and exposing the flora you want to keep or clearing the site entirely.  It can be done in one go, or over a period dependent on the area.  For instance, chemicals sprayed on leaves need to enter the root system to kill them completely.; sufficient rainfall is needed to uproot the plants etc.

Hedge Pruning within the season of per shrub

Most flora within your garden will need to be done during specific times of the year especially specific pruning; feeding and mulching; irrigation and Deadheading. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked or done at the wrong time of the year. For instance, Ivy needs major work done in springtime to protect wildlife and Conifers from March to August as they are sensitive to the climate.

Pruning examples below

Lorrel Hedges: prune late winter and early spring

Conifers: Between April and August

Ivy Between March and April

Lonicera Nitida: Late Spring early summer or late Autumn

Buxus Hedges: Late May to early June and again August to early September

Weed Spraying, Early Spring to late Autumn

Weeds need to be sprayed during active and dry periods, and not when animals and children are in the area. Before conducting weed spraying, I’ll issue some safety instructions beforehand and roughly how long that variety takes to die on average. Normally Herb Robert dies slowly whist Dandelions die quickly. Concentrated areas of grass, ground elder or ivy may need several visits to eventually eliminate the source.

:

Tree Pruning, only at a certain height dependant of the name and variety

Fruit Trees are generally done in late Winter to early spring since they are dormant, and the cuts are often done at a 45’d angle for the runoff of water.  It's important to aerate fruit trees to assist with cross breaching and enough space to pick the fruit

Woodland and wildlife habitats to encourage diversity to your garden

Vegetation can provide shelter for insects and amphibians with a canopy to protect them from arial invaders. It can promote soil enhancement, retain moisture and prevent diseases from taking ahold. Trees on the otherhand promote shade, nesting sites and enable canopy dwelling animals to live.

Seasonal Displays throughout the year (Wildflowers, Annuals and Herbaceous plats etc

There are plenty of seasonal flora to add colour to your garden year-round, For instance, bulbs are generally associated with springtime, herbaceous plants have a tapestry of flowers and can flower at various times of the year, annuals can also add short bursts of colour throughout summer and winter. Wildflowers mixed with grasses can be an excellent habitat for replacing lawns.

Lawns, seeding, turfing and treatments dependent on assessment beforehand

Promoting a healthy lawn is an ongoing process regarding the upkeep of keeping the weeds, moss, and insect population in check. As grass species are seasonal and die to form a dead matt, scarification is required to assist in the germination of new grass to penetrate deeper into the soil. There’s more grass than simply mowing it.

Recycling Organic matter Application to Enhance soil and weeds

Organic matter assists with soil bonding and prevents wind erosion whist assisting with root anchors as penetration for plants to establish themselves.  The matter preserves water retention and promotes microbial insect activity.

Rose Pruning Maintenance Autumn to late spring

For the process of elimination, most rose pruning will be done in February when they begin to bud and not repeat the process twice.  For instance, the frost often burns the cuts done in Autumn. Removing the deadrises in Autumn is okay to promote the existing diseases spreading. Dead heading can be done year-round.

Soil, moisture, temperature Testing for the best results of the plant

A basic soil testing kit can allow you to pinpoint where the plant may do well once planted. For instance, planting chrysanthemums and pinks under hedges from doing this can be a higher probability of survival. If you have an established plant within a pot, you may be able to plant it in a location where you may least expect it to survive. Doing the sundial test helps.

Dividing plants mainly in spring and mid to late Autumn

Plants that either grow to big, or need splitting can be an excellent way to plug holes in the garden and can save you money long term.

Feeding Plants

Rose feed application can bring the roses to full bloom

Jobs during quiet periods may not be related to horticulture

Gardening is dependent on the weather and during quiet periods, erratic weather I will switch other to other projects.
